What is Mahjong, anyway?

If you have ever walked the streets of Hong Kong or any Chinatown in the world, you undoubtedly heard the distinctive sounds of mahjong tiles being stirred up. In the past, tiles were made of bone and bamboo, but today's tiles are usually made of plastic. All Mandarin Orange mahjong items are made exclusively with vintage bone and bamboo tiles.

Mahjong is similar to the card game Rummy where the goal is to accumulate sets. The Chinese game set usually includes 136 or 144 tiles, however, these numbers can also vary depending on where the set was made and where it is played. All mahjong products made by Mandarin Orange include a tile explanation card so that your customers can easily distinguish the tiles they have in their item.

There are three suits: bamboo (tiao), circles (bing), and numbers (wan). In addition to the three suits there are also wind tiles of east (dong), west (xi), north (bei), and south (nan), as well as the dragon tiles of red dragon (hong zhong), green dragon (fa cai) and white dragon (bai da).

Who are those two girls on the swing?

Our logo is an adaptation of a contemporary painting called "The Swinging Concubines" (Anonymous). History tells us that imperial concubines spent their free time on swings chatting (about what, we can only imagine) and taking exercise. For those of you wondering--no, there is no resemblance between the girls and Carleen and Darcy--we just like the painting!
